It was co-founded by Adam Hotchkiss, Aman Singla, Fahri Diner and Sri Nathan, aiming to provide the best combination of hardware and software. In September 2015, Plume Design raised $21.1 million in Series A funding from Comcast and five other investors.

In January 2016, Plume Design raised $4,657,341 in Series B funding from Jackson Square Ventures and 2 other investors.

In June 2017, Plume Design raised $41.6 million in Series C funding from Comcast and DIVC (Deutsche Invest Venture Capital).

In February 2020, Plume Design, a US smart home company, completed a new round of $85 million in financing, including $60 million in Series D financing and $25 million in debt financing. The Series D financing was jointly participated by new investors Charter Communications, Qualcomm Ventures LLC, Belkin and Service Electric Cable Vision, as well as existing investors Liberty Global and Shaw Communications. At the same time, the debt financing was jointly invested by Silicon Valley Bank and West River Group.
