ISO22000 international standard stipulates food management system requirements

The ISO22000 international standard stipulates that the food management system requirements include the following:

Interactive communication

Prerequisite Programs

System Management

HACCP principles

The above elements have been critically reviewed by many scientists. Communication along the food chain is essential to ensure that all relevant food safety hazards are identified and that adequate control is in place at each step in the food chain, which means communication between upstream and downstream organizations in the food chain. Communicating identified hazards and control measures with customers and suppliers will help clarify requirements with customers and suppliers. ISO22000 can be independent of other management system standards, or integrated with existing management system requirements.

ISO22000 integrates the principles of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system and the application steps developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Through auditable requirements, it combines the HACCP plan with the prerequisite programs. Hazard analysis is the key to an effective hazard analysis food safety management system, assisting organizations in establishing the knowledge required for an effective combination of control measures. ISO22000 requires that all hazards that are reasonably expected to appear in the food chain, including hazards that may be related to the types of processes and equipment used, be identified and evaluated, therefore, it provides methods to determine and record why certain identified hazards need to be controlled by a particular organization and why others do not.

ISO is developing more relevant ISO22000 standards, which will be referred to as the ISO22000 series of standards. At this stage, the following ISO22000 international standards specify food management system requirements:

ISO22000 - Food safety management systems - Requirements for any organization in the food chain.

ISO22001 - Guide to the application of ISO 9001:2000 to the food and beverage industry (replaces: ISO 15161:2001).

ISO/TS 22002 - Food safety - Part 1: Prerequisite programmes for food manufacturing

ISO TS 22003 - Food safety management systems for bodies involved in the audit and certification of food safety management systems.

ISO TS 22004 - Food safety management systems - Guidance on the application of ISO 22000:2005.

ISO 22005 - Traceability in the feed and food chain – General principles and essential requirements for the design and implementation of systems.

ISO 22006 - Quality management systems - Guidance for the application of ISO9001:2000 certification to crop production.

It can also be used for ISO22000 Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) scheme FS22000, which is a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) approved scheme.

Compared to ISO 9001, this standard is more of a principle-based procedural guideline oriented 1. Besides this, ISO22000 is the one which can be closely incorporated into any type of processed food marketing industry, specific risk management system, ISO9001 quality management system, specific similarities and differences of the two "standards" can be found.
