What is SCS?

SCS Global Services, referred to as "SCS Certification", is an international organization in the third-party certification, verification and verification of environmental, sustainable development, food safety and quality performance statements. SCS Certification does not refer to a certification standard but a third-party certification organization headquartered in California, USA. Its business operations are spread across six continents, with 22 strategic offices and regional representative offices, as well as a wide network of auditors. Clients include well-known product and retail brands, small and medium-sized commercial enterprises, innovative new companies, government agencies and non-governmental organizations. It has provided professional solutions for many companies in the global market.

So what exactly is the SCS certification we often talk about?

Usually refers to SCS Recycled Content Certification, referred to as SCS RC certification or Kingfisher RC certification. Recycled Content Certification (Recycled Content) began in 1990 and is the world's first recycled content certification system. According to the definition of recycled materials in the international standard ISO14021, recycled material certification reuses waste, thereby making the best use of materials and protecting natural resources. Recycled Content has become a product in the US Green Building Evaluation System (LEED) and Environmentally Friendly Purchasing (EPP) projects.

What industries are RC certification applicable to?

RC certification is not limited to any industry. As long as recycled materials are used, you can apply for Recycled Content certification.

Definition of RC Certified Recycling

Pre-consumer material: waste material from the production process, excluding: Recycled raw materials, such as waste materials reused in the same production process Note: "Recycled" means materials generated in a production process at the same site that can be recycled into the same process for continued use

Post-consumer material: Material generated by households, commercial and industrial sectors or public institutions that are the end users of products and can no longer be used for their original purpose

Key points of RC certification: Establishing a quality management system, identifying and confirming qualified suppliers, controlling the production process of recycled products, achieving traceability, and balancing input and output materials, etc.

RC certification process steps :

1. Apply for certification

Complete and submit an SCS Application Form. Kingfisher Certification will evaluate the project based on the information provided in the application and prepare a proposed timeline and quote for your approval. Once you approve the proposal, you will sign a work order and an Account Manager will be assigned to guide you through the certification process.

2. Data Collection

The Kingfisher Certification Technical Coordinator will help you collect preliminary data and submit it to Kingfisher Certification. SCS Certification will review product data, company documents, manufacturing processes, product formulas, test reports, etc. and assess whether you are ready for an audit. Once sufficient data is collected, an auditor will be assigned.

3. Audit

SCS Kingfisher Certification will conduct a certification audit, which will include an on-site inspection of your facility and an assessment of your upstream supply chain. The auditor will interact with your technical staff to clarify and obtain any additional information that may prove critical to reaching an accurate and supportable assessment.

4. Draft evaluation report

The auditor will write a draft assessment report detailing the audit findings, including data analysis, nonconformities, and opportunities for improvement.

5. Internal peer review

Another qualified Kingfisher certified auditor will review the report and make any necessary corrections or modifications before the report is sent to the client.

6. Corrective Actions

You will be required to respond to any non-conformities and develop a corrective action plan. You will also be able to comment and respond to the information in the report and the conclusions reached by the auditor.

7. Make certification decision

SCS will conduct a final technical review of the assessment report and make the final certification decision. If certification is granted, SCS will issue the certificate and final report to your facility or operation. Once certified, your company will be listed in the Green Product Certificate Database and on the SCS website.

8. Authentication support

SCS Certification provides ongoing program support, including ongoing staff assistance, marketing and promotional support, and information on new or revised requirements. You will receive information on the logo approval system and the use of the Kingfisher trademark for on-product and off-product promotional activities.

9. Certification maintenance and renewal

SCS requires annual surveillance audits to maintain your certification. Participation in the Responsible Sourcing Certification Program benefits you, your customers and other stakeholders because you can demonstrate your proactive efforts to protect the environment, demonstrate your commitment to protecting worker health and safety, support your customers’ sustainable sourcing and manufacturing goals, and leverage improved sourcing strategies based on supply chain risk management tools.
