Primark-Quality-Tool---Metal Management Developing an effective metal management policy requires the establishment of several procedures.
Needle ManagementThis section sets out procedures for various situations, including broken machine needles, knitting needles, machine needles, hand sewing needles and the management of needle resources. •All needles must be kept in a locked place with only trained personnel authorized to access them.
Broken needle
•When a needle breakage occurs, the operation must be stopped and the supervisor informed.
•All broken needle fragments must be found and checked to ensure that all fragments have been found •The broken needle fragments must be immediately attached to the broken needle report (see the example below) with transparent tape and all information must be recorded •Only when all broken needle fragments are confirmed to have been found can a new needle be issued
•If all broken needle fragments cannot be found, then the product being produced and any other products in its vicinity must be placed in bags or boxes and sent to a quarantine area for further inspection •The workplace must be checked with a handheld metal detector or magnet before continuing production •Handheld detectors must be properly calibrated and operated using a 1.2mm "test piece" before use
•Search the quarantine area for missing broken needle fragments. If found, all fragments should be taped to the Broken Needle Report as previously described. If not found, the product must be placed in a plastic bag and stored in a secure rejected product bin for later disposal •New needles may only be issued when the workplace is confirmed to be sub-clean - the policy must be "one needle out, one needle in."
