Huawei releases 2009 Corporate Social Responsibility Report in North America
Huawei has released its first annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report in North America, detailing the company's continued efforts to enrich people's lives through information and communication technologies in the United States and Canada. Throughout 2009, Huawei has carried out a series of positive CSR initiatives in North America, with the goal of contributing to the harmonious and sustainable development of society, economy and environment as a good corporate citizen. It is reported that the purpose of Huawei's CSR report is to enhance mutual understanding and communication with stakeholders and provide information on Huawei's CSR initiatives and activities in the areas of environmental sustainability, social contribution, expanded relief, education, personnel and business code of conduct. In the past few months, Huawei employees have voluntarily participated in many activities of national and local non-profit organizations (charities) in North America, including the American Lung Association, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, etc. As a company, Huawei has made meaningful donations to organizations such as the Children's Hospital in Plano, Texas, the North Texas Food Bank, and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition, Huawei has funded and partnered with many universities in North America to help promote the popularization of information and communication technology and enhance their professional skills. "We believe that sustainable business growth is the foundation for achieving greater corporate social responsibility," said Charlie Chen, vice president of marketing and products at Huawei America. "2009 was a year of strong growth for Huawei and an important year for expanding our corporate social responsibility activities in North America. Compared with last year, we will gradually strengthen our commitment to improving people's lives through corporate social responsibility. Through our joint efforts with our valued partners, we look forward to making greater contributions to society and further enriching people's lives through information and communication technology." Huawei achieved sales revenue of US$408 million in North America in 2009, a year-on-year increase of 63%. Becoming a major supplier to Clearwire, the world's largest WiMAX operator, is a major reason for its breakthrough performance in the region. Huawei's current carrier customers in the United States include Leap Wireless, Cox Communications, MetroPCS Communication and Clearwire, and its carrier customers in Canada include Telus, Bell Canada and SaskTel. In June 2009, Huawei released its first global corporate social responsibility report (2008), covering its latest progress in bridging the digital divide, green environmental protection, giving back to the community, as well as business ethics, employees, supply chain and other fields.
