PRIMARK--Irish clothing retailer

PRIMARK is an Irish clothing retailer with chain operations in Ireland (including 38 stores named PENNEYS), the UK, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands. PRIMARK's development history:

In June 1969, a PENNEYS store opened on St Mary's Street in Dublin. Within a year, four more stores opened in the Dublin area. In 1971, the first large store opened in Cork, and in the same year, PENNEYS opened a total of 11 stores in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

By 1973, PRIMARK had 18 stores in Ireland and began trading with four suburban stores in the UK. The following year, the store opened on the high streets of Derby and Bristol in the UK. In the next ten years, PRIMARK added 18 stores in the UK and 9 in Ireland, totaling 22 stores in the UK and Ireland. In addition, in 1984, PRIMARK acquired five stores from Woolworth in Ireland.

From 1984 to 1994, PRIMARK had a total of 66 stores in the UK and Ireland. When BHS withdrew from the Irish market in 1992, it purchased its main flagship store on O'Connell Street in Dublin, covering an area of 50,000 square feet.

1995 was a landmark year for PRIMARK, as the development of the UK business led to the full acquisition of the BHS discount chain. As a result, 16 large stores were added to the operation, most of which were in the London area. Another large acquisition was in 1999, when the Co-Op took over 11 stores in Reading.

In 2000, C&A withdrew from the UK market and PRIMARK acquired their 11 stores, bringing the total number of stores to 108. In October 2001, PRIMARK's flagship store in Manchester had a sales area of 100,000 square feet.

Between 2004 and 2005, PRIMARK opened 14 new stores, adding 400,000 square feet of sales area. In July 2005, ABF, the parent company, acquired 120 properties from LITTLEWOODS, and 41 stores were transferred to PRIMARK.

In May 2006, PRIMARK entered Spain with the opening of its first store in Madrid, followed by Murcia in September 2006.

In December 2008, PRIMARK opened its first store in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

In May 2009, PRIMARK opened its first stores in Lisbon, Portugal and Bremen, Germany.

In December 2009, PRIMARK opened its first store in Liege, Belgium.

By 2011, PRIMARK expanded further, opening new stores in the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal and Germany.
